SMA presents bills for establishment of Federal College of Agriculture Katcha, Federal University of Medicine and Health Sciences Bida and 3 other Bills
The bills for an act to establish Federal College of Agriculture, Katcha, Federal University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Bida and National Rice Development Council by member representing Bida/Gbako/Katcha Federal Constituency, Honourable Saidu Musa Abdullahi have scaled through first reading today in the House of Representatives of Nigeria.
Hon. Saidu Musa Abdullahi introduced the bills alongside amendment of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999(alteration) bill, 2019 and Public Service Efficiency Bill, 2019 to the house at the plenary session which was presided over by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Ahmed Idris Wase .
Now that government is shifting is economic base to agriculture, more agricultural training schools need to be established. Niger State is the largest rice producing state in Nigeria with Katcha LG occupying the first position in the State.
Presence of National Cereal Reaserach Institute in Badeggi, Katcha will provide agricultural extension services tothe proposed College of Agriculture in Katcha.
Katcha LG is also popular for fish farming. Similarly, The establishment of a Federal University of Medicine and Health sciences to be situated in Bida has been justified by the Central location of the town (Bida) with an existing Tertiary Health Institution(FMC) also taking into consideration the population of Niger State estimated at four million.
The state University has no medical college and the only Federal University in the state has no mandate to run medical courses, the electorate have to compete with other states in ABU, BUK, UDOSOK etc for admissions.
In addition, Federal Medical Centre in Bida has both manpower and equipment to support the proposed university, in fact FMC has teaching mandate that is not fully utilized now.
